Three Things to Know
- December 7 was the 83rd anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Nearly all the American vessels that were hit during the 1941 Pearl Harbor attack were later repaired, but the USS Arizona wasn’t so lucky. The 608-foot Pennsylvania-class battleship went under after an ammunition magazine exploded. Some 1,177 Marines and sailors perished aboard the Arizona. Altogether, there were 38 sets of brothers, representing a total of 79 men, on the battleship at the time. Within that group, 63 individual men were killed. (Source: Mental Floss)
- John Lennon was killed outside his residence in New York City on December 8, 1980. The former Beatle was shot by Mark David Chapman, an avid American Beatles fan who was envious and enraged by Lennon’s lifestyle. Chapman said he was inspired by the fictional character Holden Caulfield from J. D. Salinger’s novel “The Catcher in the Rye,” a “phony-killer” who loathes hypocrisy. (Source: Wikipedia)
- The United States gives more in aid to foreign countries than the next nine countries combined. In 2023, the United States gave 4.5 times the second place European Union in humanitarian aid. (Source: @DOGE)
